The Piazza on Church Square

a brief history

The historic Groote Kerk building was built alongside the Groote Kerk in the 1930s in what is referred to as the ‘Cathedral Precinct’ of ‘old town’ Cape Town.

The Groote Kerk Clock Tower is today recognised as one of Cape Town’s most important heritage sites and dates back to 1770.

Groote Kerk building, now named ‘The Piazza on Church Square’, overlooks numerous National Monuments located within the ‘old town’, including the carefully preserved Slave Lodge, St George’s Cathedral and the Company’s Gardens.

The redevelopment of the building began with the original 9 floors being converted into 52 apartments above 3 floors of offices.  The next phase involved the addition of 4 more levels comprising 26 luxury apartments.
